About Binge Eating and Emotional Eating
Turning to food during stress, boredom, sadness, or anxiety is common, and it isn’t a character flaw. Emotional eating often develops as a way of coping when feelings are hard to sit with, and binge eating can follow the same pattern: eating past fullness, feeling out of control in the moment, and then feeling guilt or shame afterward.
These patterns tend to be cyclical and self-reinforcing. Restriction can lead to binging, binging can lead to more restriction or guilt, and the cycle continues. It can be confusing and isolating, especially when it feels like everyone else has a straightforward relationship with food.
Questions to consider regarding your relationship with food include:
- Do you eat in response to emotions like stress, boredom, sadness, or loneliness rather than physical hunger?
- Do you feel out of control around certain foods or during certain moments?
- Do you eat quickly, or past the point of fullness, without fully registering it?
- Do you feel guilt or shame about eating, or hide how much or how often you eat?
- Do you use food as a way to manage difficult feelings, and then feel worse afterward?
- Do you notice a cycle of restricting and then eating large amounts at once?
If these patterns sound familiar, therapy can help. Our goal is to help you understand what’s underneath the eating pattern, the emotions, habits, and life circumstances driving it, so you can build a different relationship with food and with yourself. We use evidence-based approaches to help make connections between eating behaviours, thoughts, and feelings, and to build new ways of coping that don’t rely on food.
You deserve to feel steady around food and comfortable in your body. We’d love to help you take a step toward that.
